Hasidic pilgrims leave mountains of trash in Uman after Rosh Hashanah
On September 13, 2026, pilgrims in Uman, Cherkasy Region, concluded the three-day celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. After the festivities, streets across the city were left covered in trash, overwhelming municipal cleanup crews, according to Novyny.LIVE.
More than 50,000 Hasidic pilgrims came to the city. Visitors left makeshift piles of plastic dishes, boxes and bags of leftover food in residential courtyards around garbage containers. Household waste blocked parked cars and formed massive piles directly on the streets.
Uman’s municipal crews are working nonstop, but they lack enough equipment and personnel to clear the neighborhoods quickly. Heavy crowds on central roads are also making it difficult for garbage trucks to get through. The condition of public spaces has sparked strong outrage among local residents.
As the UOJ reported, Chișinău Airport restricted access amid the influx of Hasidic pilgrims.
