Kyiv resident charged over threats against Ukraine’s chief rabbi
A Kyiv resident faces up to five years in prison for posting online threats against Ukraine’s chief rabbi.
Police have charged a 44-year-old Kyiv resident who allegedly posted death threats against Ukraine’s chief rabbi on social media, as well as insults targeting military personnel and law enforcement officers, Kyiv Police reported on Facebook.
According to investigators, the 44-year-old man posted a message on his social media page containing direct death threats against Ukraine’s chief rabbi.
Law enforcement officials said the suspect also posted messages on his personal profile insulting members of national minorities on the basis of their religious beliefs, threatening to destroy their property, and threatening physical violence against Ukrainian military personnel and law enforcement officers.
Police investigators classified his alleged actions under Part 2 of Article 129 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – death threats motivated by religious intolerance – and Part 1 of Article 161 – violation of citizens’ equality on the grounds of race, nationality, or religious beliefs.
The more serious of the charges carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that the SBU detained an antisemite for calling to tear down banners with Jewish holidays.
