Prosecutor in Metropolitan Theodosiy case named in NABU tapes

On September 8, 2026, Maksym Shtompel – a prosecutor involved in the first criminal case against UOC Metropolitan Theodosiy of Cherkasy and Kaniv who also appears in NABU and SAPO materials from the special operation “Carthage” – was dismissed from the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office. This was reported by Dozor on Pershyi Kozatskyi.

Before his dismissal, Shtompel served as deputy head of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office. He also appears in recordings released by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) as part of the special operation “Carthage.” According to the authors of the report, the recordings include discussions about the circumstances surrounding his appointment and an alleged monthly payment of $1,000.

According to Dozor, Shtompel headed the first case against Metropolitan Theodosiy. He was present during the first searches of the hierarch’s premises, personally served him with a notice of suspicion and took part in interrogations. The outlet notes that the prosecutor who was directly involved in the prosecution of the UOC hierarch later became a subject of an anti-corruption investigation himself.

Court proceedings against Metropolitan Theodosiy have been ongoing since 2023. Hearings are held roughly every two weeks, while the court extends the hierarch’s pretrial restrictions every two months. At the beginning of the proceedings, prosecutors sought to have him placed under round-the-clock house arrest and required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that Metropolitan Theodosiy said the Ukrainian authorities’ actions against the UOC fall under the Rome Statute’s definition of genocide.
