Archbishop Ieronymos and Patriarch Theophilos call for Orthodox unity

Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece met with Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem at the Archbishopric of Athens. The visit of the Primate of the Jerusalem Church to Greece was the first in many years and included discussions of the situation in the Middle East, reports the UOJ in Greece.

Archbishop Ieronymos noted the important peacemaking mission of the Jerusalem Patriarchate during periods of acute conflicts. At the same time, he clearly emphasized the necessity of pan-Orthodox unity. The head of the Church of Greece stated that sister Local Churches are obligated to preserve harmony and develop dialogue for the sake of common Orthodox witness before the challenges of our time.

Patriarch Theophilos expressed gratitude for the warm reception and called the Church of Greece the nurturer of all Orthodox patriarchates. The Primate emphasized that Greece has raised many holy fathers and theologians who support the faith throughout the world. The Patriarch also thanked the Greek clergy for material assistance to the Holy Sepulchre and support for student education programs through scholarships.

During the conversation, the hierarchs paid attention to issues of clergy service in overseas communities and new legislative initiatives by Greek authorities in this sphere. Patriarch Theophilos plans to conduct a series of meetings with the country's highest political leadership as part of his official visit.

As the UOJ reported, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem after the Divine service in Athens stated that the Jerusalem Church occupies a unique place among the Local Orthodox Churches. According to the Patriarch, while other Local Churches are founded on the preaching of the holy apostles, the Jerusalem Church has a special connection with the very place of Christ's Resurrection.
