Earthquake strikes Mount Athos

On the evening of March 25, 2026, an earthquake measuring up to magnitude 5.0 struck Mount Athos, with tremors also felt in several parts of northern Greece, Romfea.gr reports.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located 8 kilometers northwest of Karyes, the administrative center of the Holy Mountain. The quake originated at a depth of about 5 kilometers, which made the tremors feel stronger.
The shaking was felt in Thessaloniki as well. After the main quake, at least three aftershocks were recorded, the strongest of them reaching magnitude 3.3.
According to preliminary information, there have been no reports of injuries or serious damage on Mount Athos.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Bulgaria would allocate €1.5 million to build a road to Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos.
