Civilization without Christ is darkness in gold

On this day, we commemorate Saint Andrew the First-Called Apostle, who long before the Baptism of Rus', by the blessing of the Lord Himself, proclaimed the Name of Christ on our lands, and Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, the enlightener of Rus'.
Sacred Tradition tells us that Apostle Andrew, having traversed the lands of the Black Sea region, ascended the Dnieper, reached the hills of Kyiv, erected a cross, and prophetically said: «On these hills, the grace of God will shine, and there will be a great city, and God will raise many churches here». These words became a prototype of the future enlightenment of Rus', which began with Kyiv.
But the prophecy of the Apostle was fulfilled only when a person was found who was ready to accept Christ with all his heart and lead people. Prince Vladimir not only accepted the new faith — he was reborn, becoming a different person. Once a cruel pagan, he became a merciful Christian ruler.
The baptism of Prince Vladimir and the people in the waters of the Dnieper was not only an act of faith but also an act of moral choice. Rus' chose the path of light, not darkness; the path of peace, not discord; the path of Christ, not pagan gods and superstitions.
And today, more than a thousand years later, this choice stands before us with renewed urgency. Ukraine is once again going through the purifying crucible of trials. On our land, the Spirit of Christ and the spirit of this world - neo-paganism, the spirit of brotherly love and the spirit of discord, the spirit of holiness and the spirit of evil - clash once more.
The Baptism of Rus' — is not just a memory, it is a call. A call to be Christians not by name, but by life. A call not only to wear a cross on the chest as an ornament but to carry one's life cross. To be a light for the world, not continuers of darkness. Saint Prince Vladimir changed himself, and by this transformed others. This means our mission today — is not so much a struggle for power, not disputes about the external, but internal transformation.
Let's start with ourselves — and it will become brighter around us. Today's Ukrainian, if he is a Christian — is not one who fights with other people based on national or linguistic grounds, and not one who «repaints» the Church to fit political circumstances. The true heir of Prince Vladimir — is one who lives according to the Gospel. Who does not divide people by slogans, but gathers them around Christ.
Saint Apostle Andrew did not bring any weapons to the Slavic lands. He brought the Cross and the Word of Life. Saint Vladimir did not build a militant empire, he built the Kingdom of God in the hearts of the people entrusted to him by God. And we must not forget: civilization without Christ — is just darkness dressed in gold. But with Christ, even in poverty, one can be a light for the world. We must understand that there will be no peace on earth until there is peace in the heart. And peace in the heart is only for those who have accepted Christ.
On the day of the Baptism of Rus', let the same grace that our ancestors received in the waters of the Dnieper be renewed and multiplied in each of us. Let the Cross of Christ be not a symbol of division, but a banner of unity. Let the faith of Apostle Andrew and the zeal of Prince Vladimir awaken in us the courage to be true Christians – to the end, not to renounce Christ by word, deed, or silence. Because, by renouncing Christ, we betray both the past, the present, and the future. But together with Christ — we will resurrect, and so will the people and the country.
