In Kyiv, a “Holy Face Not Made by Hands” (Spas Nerukotvorny) made from fragments of mines and shells was unveiled. The creator of this so-called icon is an American named Serhiy Melnykoff.
According to him, the relief “image” of Christ consists of six layers of black fragments from artillery mines and shells. None of them were mechanically processed; each piece was selected by hand. The unsettling black “face of Christ” is placed on a “towel” made from flattened 12- and 30-caliber shell casings covered in gold.
Melnykoff claims he worked on the project for three months together with a welder. He keeps about two tons of fragments in his workshop.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Zelensky had given Pope Francis an “icon” featuring an empty space where the Infant Jesus would traditionally be depicted.
