In Kaniv, land under UOC’s Assumption Cathedral transferred to the state

In Kaniv, following a lawsuit by the Smila District Prosecutor's Office, the state act granting the Kyiv Metropolis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) permanent land use rights for the Assumption Cathedral has been annulled. This was reported by the press service of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor's Office on February 28, 2025.
The agency claims that the land under the Assumption Cathedral, an archaeological monument of national significance built in 1144, has been returned to the state.
"The Prosecutor's Office is taking measures to establish a new land plot designated for historical and cultural purposes," the statement reads.
As previously reported by the UOJ, on February 14, the Shevchenko National Reserve, with the assistance of enforcement services and police, gained access to the Assumption Cathedral in Kaniv, Cherkasy region. "Finally, the UOC-MP has lammed from the Assumption Cathedral," said former reserve director Valentyna Kovalenko.
