On January 19, 2025, former U.S. President Joe Biden was admitted to the Prince Hall Masonic organization in South Carolina, which is dedicated to African Americans. An official resolution regarding his admission was published on Reddit, a platform originally created for Black Masons during the U.S. Civil War.
This organization is known for its active involvement in political events, such as the Black Lives Matter protests, which deviates from traditional Masonic principles of non-interference in politics. Despite this, Prince Hall remains recognized by the United Grand Lodge of England and most white Masonic lodges in the United States.
"To be a Freemason is to be part of a brotherhood dedicated to personal growth, service to others, and the pursuit of knowledge and truth. It is an honor to belong to an organization that promotes timeless values," the Resolution of Membership states.
One of the reasons cited for Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s admission into the organization is that "his service reflects the core values of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of South Carolina, including brotherly love, relief, and truth."
As previously reported by the UOJ, former President Donald Trump conducted a social media poll on the potential banning of LGBT symbols and public movements opposing racism and violence against Black people, such as Black Lives Matter, in schools.
